Tis’ the season, Tis’ the season—for giving, celebrations with family and friends, and New Year’s resolutions. Many people will begin mapping out goals for 2019, but let’s be realistic – New Year’s resolutions generally fall by the wayside by Spring, only to be picked up again the next year. Sometimes, it’s not just that we fail to execute, but we fail to fully reflect on the past year, thus impacting our capacity to look and move forward. I would encourage us all to spend some time at the end of this year reflecting on the answers to some important questions:

What did I do this year that “worked”?  What didn’t work? Was I completely invested in my goals? What was my “why” behind what I accomplished or wanted to accomplish? Where might I have regrets? What didn’t I accomplish that I wish I would have? Where and with whom should I have spent a little more time? How did this year make me feel?

The answers to these questions build the foundation for our journey moving forward.

As we reflect in preparation for looking forward, we must remain aware that with each day we live, we are creating the very legacy that we will leave behind. I encourage everyone to love one another, regardless of one’s race, religion, sexual orientation, and self-identity – and because of our differences. When hate seems to abound, let your love be the remedy. I’ll conclude my last Inclusion Solution submission of the year with a poem, in honor of my late father, Lawrence R. Winters Jr., a man who stood for unity, built the community, exemplified love, and was the epitome of life.

Live Life

Live life! Be grateful for the NOW, what was then, and what could have been.

Stay hopeful for a change, even if the only change you see is from within.

Love, but not just love “generally”, love others within their differences and similarities, love yourself through your short-comings, love the hate out of others as if love was the only resort.

Go through all of your mountians and valleys with an open heart. Find strength in that “this too shall pass”.

Laugh until you flow medicinal rivers to your soul. Be humble and do more than just sit down, lean all the way back to see the bigger picture — then lean in to help those that are around.

Know that you are enough, and you can do all things.

Never let a day go by without you living your life of purpose, at this time, in this moment, on purpose.
