We are Black History. Throughout the month of February, our writers and some members of our team will share more about themselves in the form of “I am from” statements. We believe our experiences, our culture, our identities and truths shape black history, and are part of the broader spectrum of the black experience.

Brittany J. Harris, The Winters Group’s Director of Innovation and New Ventures, continues in this week’s feature post.

I am from….
By Brittany J. Harris

I am from Corey and Loretta, from Lucille & Elmer, and Louis and Bea. I am from Sunday dinners at grandmas and Saturday sleepovers with Aunt Louise. I am from, “Brittany, stop biting your nails,” and “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

I am from corner stores, sunflower seeds, and gemp. I am from whoopings with the belt, back scratcher, or whatever else they could find. I am from a storefront church and kiddie choir, the usher board too. I am from Skateland, and cousins who were my bestfriends.

I am from chicken, macaroni and cheese, greens, and perlo rice. I am from, take your child to work day, trips to Ocean City with pops, and arts and crafts with gram. I am from “God and family come first.”

I am from unconditional love and support. I am from, “Brittany, you can do anything.” I am from letters to Oprah, and Addie—my first American Girl. I am from a place where Santa didn’t exist because dad didn’t want a white man getting credit for his hard work.

I am from my two younger brothers and my beautiful son. I am from Halstead, Guilford, Winands, Carver, and “H-UUUU, You Knooooowww.” I am from the Quad, Slowe Hall, and the Doll House.

I am from a family that prays; from road trips to North Carolina and Disney World in Florida—our first time. I am from trying to cut off my eyebrows because my classmate said they were too thick. I am from, “Brittany, You ain’t grown.” I am from, “ Brittany, you are beautiful.”
