In the context of our often-polarized world, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) work and initiatives have become increasingly targeted as “divisive” and “harmful” — even classified as “brainwashing.” Those invested in forwarding these narratives seek to maintain harmful power structures and are using fear tactics to bring others on board.
Social science affirms that polarization is a predictable human response to a sense of threat, but this does not mean it is the solution. Those of us involved and invested in this work understand its impact, promise, and potential, and it is critical that we not allow persistent fear-based narratives to co-opt our coalitions, organizations, and collective futures.
In the broader effort to combat scarcity-centered “zero-sum” narratives sweeping across cultural conversations, we invite writers to consider in our new “Setting the DEI Record Straight” feature series: How have DEIJ initiatives across race, gender, ability, culture, and other dimensions of diversity supported you personally, improved your work, or benefitted your organization(s)?
DEIJ initiatives may include, but are not limited to, legislation, organizational policies, education, projects, strategy, or recruitment and retention of historically marginalized groups. Stories shared in this series will affirm the truth that DEIJ is a solution, not a problem, as we look to the future.
