The much-anticipated Election Day of 2020 has come and gone. For many, the close race led to anxiety as we watched the votes roll in and waited for the results. This election has been unlike any other, for several reasons. The 2020 outbreak of COVID-19 led to an increased number of mail in ballots and multiple days of counting (which for some places is still taking place). This year also led to a record-breaking number of voters. So, if you voted during the 2020 election, I want to personally thank you. However, it is quite clear that our work is not done. You may find yourself wondering, “What now? How can I keep this same energy and momentum going?”

Here are a few ways that you can continue to make a difference.

  1. Research volunteer opportunities that support voter education and engagement for upcoming local elections. If you’re located in North Carolina, consider volunteering with You Can Vote. You Can Vote is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to civic literacy. They work to educate, register and mobilize all persons eligible to vote in North Carolina.
  2. Set up a recurring donation to organizations that have values and goals aligned with yours. Be strategic in your giving. Write down issues that are important to you and research organizations that are already doing the work.
  3. Attend Town Hall Meetings. Town halls tend to bring in community members across different areas of interest, so there’s opportunity to be heard and become more involved with local issues. Invite a friend to attend with you. This is a great way to meet your local legislators and possibly some members of Congress. If you live in Charlotte, you can find upcoming meetings here. If not, a quick search online for “local town hall meetings” should lead you in the right direction.
  4. Speak up about issues that matter to you. Your voice can make a difference. Whether you realize it or not, you may have the privilege to speak up when others do not. Although you may not always change perspectives, engaging in open and honest conversationis important. These conversations have the potential to challenge you and others (without you even knowing)further supporting your growth and understanding.
  5. Monitor your social media usage and news consumption. Self-care has always been important, but this year you may have found yourself focusing on it even more. If the news becomes too overwhelming, simply cut it off and give yourself time to step away and refocus.

Regardless of what lies ahead of us for the remainder of this year and years to come, you can try to make a difference. Every step forward is a step closer to your goal. Push forward.
