I have witnessed the pandemic bring out some of the worst in  people—racism, xenophobia, entitlement, greed, and ultimately “othering”—excluding, shaming, and hurting those in highest need of care, people of color, and those who don’t have the resources to manage, let alone survive, a pandemic like this. To overcome the virus as a nation, as a world, it is imperative that we prioritize health equity and inclusion and utilize our global connectedness for the positive: taking inclusive stances that prioritize the health of all people through our actions, our companies, our communities.

The Buzz: Practicing Physical Distancing… and Social Connection

This week, primary and secondary schools across the country closed or shifted to online learning. Thousands of college students said goodbye to friends, professors, and campuses, and packed their things and headed home, or wherever they could stay for an extended period. Employees whose jobs allow have largely taken up remote work. “Social distancing” is not the best terminology; instead, we decided that we would encourage our clients, family, and friends to practice  physical  distancing and social connection.

This is the beginning of Women’s History Month, and there will be a lot of media coverage especially because 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. It is also an opportunity to pay homage and give credit to Black women whose contributions to the suffrage movement have often been overlooked or minimized. And it is an opportunity to point out that Black women may still not find it as easy as white women to exercise this right.

Managing the Toll of DEI Work: Setting Healthy Boundaries

Most of us in D&I can recall plenty of times we have felt overwhelmed by the work. For me, there were the times in college that I felt obligated to obsessively defend points I believed in via social media, and found myself shaking with anxiety as a result.
